Rashes and hair loss

Does anyone have a nasty rash around the neck area that just won't go away? It started during taper three months ago.

And the hair loss is unbelievable!

Re: Rashes and hair loss

No rash, but plenty of hair loss. A LOT of hair loss - not in patches, but across the whole of the top of my head. Luckily for me, I'm a man in his 30s so no one thinks it's that weird... but it's definitely withdrawal. This has happened to plenty of other people too (as have the rashes, in fact).

Re: Rashes and hair loss

My hair is falling out and breaking terribly, and has been doing so for a year. Needless to say, I'm always in a pony tail trying to keep it looking halfway decent.

Around 7-8 months off these wretched drugs, I developed what looks like pimples or bumps all over my neck area. I'm 39 years old and haven't had a pimple since I was 15 ( and rarely even got them then ). I use Seabreeze with a cottonball and it helps.

Re: Rashes and hair loss

I have been losing hair steadily since I started tapering. I also have horrible acne and very dry scalp. The dry scalp thing really bothers me because I like wearing black (and brushing my shoulders off all day doesnt help with the OCD symptoms - lol).

Yes to the break-outs on the neck, and yes to the hairloss.

Are we having fun yet?

This morning I woke up to a wad of hair on my pillow -- no longer attached to my scalp. This NEVER happened before. I'm filled with thoughts of revenge. But how do you take on the pharmeutical industry all by yourself?

I already had thin hair to begin with this medication just makes it worse. My scalp is extremely ithcy and flakes are popping up everywhere. No matter what dandruff shampoo I try nothing seems to help it.

Re: Rashes and hair loss

Rashes as I understand is a part and parcel of AD's and the liver dumping it to get rid of and the skin is the easiest way to do this. It is something to watch as my neuro says it can signal your liver can't handle it so if you start to have breathing difficulties go to the ER. Whelpy rashes are usually the sign of distress not the itchy rashes. It does mean your liver is doing its thing though and getting rid of the drug. I got more rashes with each taper and it wasn't until I was clear of the drug for more than a month before the rash went away for good. The hair loss for me has finally slowed down at 56 days off. Eat as much protein as you can to counter the effects is the best suggestion I can give per one doctor. I don't know if that will help but it sounds good. I have gotten a shampoo that is suppose to help I think it does. I also take a periomenpause supplement to counter it too and maybe that is helping. I started that though before this AD experience. So the hairloss and rash is both a side effect of AD and a withdrawal affect as well. Let the fun begin..........

Re: Rashes and hair loss

Rhonda, your reply really makes sense to me. I have developed a few spots/rash around the middle of my back (i guess near my liver) and they seem to have gotten worse the lower I have got with withdrawl ! I am nearly done now (1.5mgs) so hopefully once I have finished they will go. I went to the doctor who just gave me a prescription for some antibiotics. I'm not gonna take them - think I will let it run it's course and see how it goes.

Re: Rashes and hair loss

Cookie, yeah one of my doctors, the one that prescribe the cymbalta to me gave me a creme to use to get rid of the whelpy rash, I had two, one on my arm, wrist and back, and a different one on my legs that itched so badly I gouged my legs, but after using the entire creme it did nothing. She thought I had ringworm. What a joke. My neuro said No that is not ringworm that is the cymbalta, AD rash. Another doctor agreed with her. This other doctor confirm the liver is dumping the cymbalta it can't handle throught the skin that is what the liver does when it is stressed. The neuro says she has to watch for rashes as anti seizure drugs are bad to cause rashes that can kill and usually most people if they can't tolerate a drug they get a rash first. So why don't other doctors know this I wonder? Do only neurologist get this training? LOL.......Anyway, I have found my neurologist to be the best help in this too bad I didn't go to her first when I decided to taper as she said the way I tapered was the way she would have told me slowly so that the brain has a chance to help as AD's are nasty to withdraw from.....

Kayla hasn't been here since November of 2007, so I doubt you'll get a response from her. But, I can tell you that mine is starting to thicken back up after 8 months.

Keep your hair colored, that thickens the hair shaft.

Yes, summergirl, my hair is no longer falling out and I'm happy to report that it's as thick as it was in the days before antidepressants. Give it time. You'll be fine.

Re: Rashes and hair loss

My rashes got far worse when I tapered. Apparently one of the better aspects (if there are any) of Paxil is that it is actually helpful in an antihistaminic manner, so if you change your chemical balance there is a knockon effect on your ability to process histamine ... hence itchyness and rashes (stops typing to scratch ................)

Thank you for your reply kayla! Can you tell me about your specific situation. I've been off paxil for almost 4 months and I think I lose the normal amount now ie. maybe 30-40 hairs in the am when washing and brushing. I can see fine hairs coming in at hair line. My close friends say they can't notice so that is good but I certainly can. I had a terrible withdrawal for about 3 weeks-1 month and then subsided. Hair coming out in large amounts for about 1-2 months and then slowed down.

Now kind of dealing with anxiety but not sure if that is part of withdrawal or anxiety coming back. But i'm soooooooooooo going to deal with it and never going back on antidepressants again.

thank you i appreciate your support.

Yes, I had a terrible rash in the latter part of the month of withdrawal and then went away. Then itchy scalp which seems to have improved..

I have read that about 100 hairs or so a day is normal hair loss.

I have dropped from 5.5mg t0 5 and have developed an itchy rash on the underside of my upper arms. I have never had rashes before. With this drop came also raging tinnutus in one ear, nausea and pimples.

I am now one year off of Paxil and my hair has been falling out for several weeks now. I am currently using Rogaine to try and halt the hair loss.

Re: Rashes and hair loss

Wow, how did I miss these posts?

I've had a neck rash for over a year now. As far as my head goes, that rash has stopped, the hair loss has stopped, and the hair is growing back in. But the neck rash lingers on, getting worse and better at times, but it's still there. When I use a steroid cream, it gets almost completely better, but only temporarily. And given the problems with using steroid stuff during withdrawal, I've only used it when it was REALLY bad. So, I just use cetaphil lotion several times a day.

I guess I won't know if it is paxil related or not until I get off the stuff. It is really interesting what happens to us all in this process. I know I can't blame ALL my health situations on paxil, but it is interesting how many of us get the same or similar things happening.

Re: Rashes and hair loss

Bobbykim, I can't firmly speak to the hair loss, as I have a lot of hair but do lose a bit more of it in the shower, these days.

I CAN speak to the rash thing, however. I currently have a patch on my hip. It feels like the skin rubbed too much on clothing, but imagine my surprise when I looked at the area and saw large red welt-bumps. I chuckle a bit, as the chicken pox is going around at my school, but this doesn't look like shingles, exactly. I'm going to try to chalk it up to WD and just treat the area as best I can.

Bottom line, it's so great to have this site to run to when we feel like we're all alone out there. I hope that you'll find that your hair grows back in once you've made it through WD.
